Pulled by the trendy nightlife of Es Pujols bars and restaurants, or admiring the luxury villas and houses of modern Formentera, it's easy to forget the free spirit that made of this island one of the preferred destinations for hippies in the 60s and 70s.
To remind us, every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon is the 'fira artesanal' de La Mola, often known as 'the hippie market'.
In the market days hundreds of tourists, but also residents, form a real procession toward what is a sacred event since the 70s, when artists and craftsmen who had elected Formentera an ideal homeland of their free spirit, started to meet up, exposing and sharing their creations.
Jewelry, designs, objects of any kind, all handmade and created with natural materials are ever since displayed on the 50 and more market stalls. Shopping inside the Fair still allows characters who are a reference on the island as well as young people who reach them every year, to keep their free, art oriented life going.
In the modern version of the fair, it is useless to wonder how much of the original spirit still remains.
Let yourself go with the cheerful and friendly atmosphere of the event, and you won't regret having participated.
Formentera Libre has a number of apartments, houses and hostels well located for those who want to reach the hippie market.
