History and recipe of a unique liquor from the Pitiusas Islands.: hierbas Ibicencas.
Hierbas Ibicencas is an anise taste liqueur, with a typical amber green colour.
HISTORY:
The original recipe, still in use today, was drawn up by Juan Mari Mayans, original and legendary figure of living in Formentera who toward the end of the XIX decided to study the amazing medicinal properties of some plants that could be found on the island and to travel to learn the production process of the spirits. The idea was to get a product incorporating the flavors but also the beneficial properties of the herbs used.
The result was Hierbas and the production would be later moved from Formentera to Ibiza.
RECIPE:
The recipe requires 18 ingredients, all natural, primarily local herbs extracts (alvia, lavender, fennel, thyme, Chamomile, and mint leaves and lemon and orange peels, Juniper). The result is an alcoholic beverage very pleasant and natural, that expresses aromas and flavours of Mediterranean sea at their best.
Over the years Hierbas has become part of the gastronomy of the Pitiusas Islands and is produced by companies and individuals who develop their own version of the original recipe, often jealously preserved.
From 1997 Hierbas got the 'geographical naming' Hierbas Ibicencas. Since then anyone who wants to produce the Hierbas and use its name must be registered to the Consell of Ibiza and ensure the right product quality.
Today Hierbas is a cult product that has conquered the palate of residents and of thousands of Ibiza and Formentera visitors.
