A holiday in Formentera is also culture and traditions, in the capital and the old heart of the island.
A holiday in Formentera is also culture and traditions, in the capital and the old heart of the island.
If the flow of tourists in summertime is concentrated mainly in Es Pujols, Formentera's life revolves around San Francisco, which hosts the Town Hall and the administrative offices, and it's the most populated town by the residents of the island.
The 'pueblo', with its shops, bars and traditional restaurants, is a series of charming narrow streets which converge in the picturesque central square.
Here is the symbol of San Francisco: the fortress church built in the 18th century to defend the inhabitants from the pirates who once used to visit regularly the island.
The old town offers events, festivals and some daily fairs, like the characteristic handicraft market, held every morning in summer.
You can easily reach and visit San Francisco and its surroundings by scooter, wherever you are located in Formentera, or you can find your accomodation directly in the area, ideal if you are looking for peace and relaxation.
